Chapter 10: Beverages.

Many cruisers would like to bring certain beverages along with them on the cruise in an attempt to save money and to drink what they enjoy. The following cruise hacks address the most common questions as to how to go about bringing those items onboard.

Tip #152: You’re Not a Camel.

We’ve taken both plastic water bottles and hydration systems on our cruises in the past. Having access to fresh, cold water when in port or out on an excursion keeps you from getting dehydrated or sick. Nowadays, we always take a lightweight 32-L backpack equipped with a 2-L Camelback hydration system on our excursions. Similarly, water bottles are great for keeping juice or pop in your room or walking about on deck. You can easily refill your bottle in any of the main dining areas. A water bottle is also a discreet way of drinking other beverages - if you know what I mean.

Tip #153: Particular about Water Quality?

Look into bringing your own bottled water to save money. Most cruise lines allow you to bring a limited quantity of non-alcoholic beverages onboard. Check with your particular cruise line as to what types of beverages and quantities are allowed.

Tip #154: Know Thy Limit.

You’re usually allowed 1 bottle of wine per guest. We typically pack one bottle each in our carry-on bags for easy inspection. If we’re not investing in a wine package, we often place a 3rd bottle in our checked bag. Also, don’t forget a corkscrew. And don’t forget to pack it in your checked luggage if you’re flying in from your home town to the cruise port. Otherwise, you may have to forfeit it at airport security. The most restrictive cruise lines for bringing alcohol onboard are MSC Cruise, Costa and Royal Caribbean. And the more lenient major players are Carnival, Disney, Holland America, Norwegian, Princess and Celebrity.

Tip #155: Protect Your Wine Bottles.

A neoprene, protective sleeve or plastic bubble wrap designed for bottles does a great job of preventing any unwelcome surprises when you unpack your wine bottle. In a pinch, you could also place the neck of your bottle in a pair of shoes. The neck is the most vulnerable part of the bottle when traveling.

Tip #156: Will They Notice that I Snuck Alcohol on Board?

Maybe, maybe not. While frowned upon by the cruise industry, many seasoned cruisers do it indiscreetly. It depends on how you pack your checked luggage. Consider taking your favorite alcohol in irregular-shaped collapsible plastic bottles. They’re less likely to show up on the X-ray screens. But, you do need to factor in the consequences should you get caught, which could be as drastic as not being allowed on the ship at embarkation.

Tip #157: Into Wacky Weed?

Smoking drugs is not tolerated on cruises. However, for those seeking the medicinal benefits that cannabis has to offer, consider taking a vaporizer like the “Crafty” along with a “Smoke Buddy” hand-held portable carbon filter. Vaping into a carbon filter eliminates most of the odors. As an alternative, bring along some canna-caps or your favorite edibles, which are more discreet.
